What KIDS are saying
"I couldn't have made my first quilt without Laura! She has such a way of explaining things that makes it so much easier. I went from not even knowing how to sew to making a whole quilt!"

Grace, age 13
"I really enjoyed making my first quilt. Laura made the experience easy and fun. I would most definitely make another quilt. I had tons of fun and would recommend this for other kids to try. Even though the sewing process can get difficult, it is TOTALLY worth it in the end. 10/10!"
Autumn, age 10
"I enjoyed making my quilt. Quilting takes patience and helps your learn precision and doing your best."
Avery, age 10
"It was fun to see all the small pieces come together and make something bigger. I would definitely make another quilt!"
Charlotte, age 13
"I very much enjoyed making a quilt. I am making another one now!"
Kamdyn, age 8
What MOMS are saying
"My daughter learned a lot about the process of making a quilt - and about herself. Breaking the quilt down into smaller steps helped her learn to set goals and get quick wins. She did a great job, and I hope she continues to make quilts all her life!"
Pearl
"I was so proud of my daughter when she made her quilt! I have never made a quilt, so seeing her learn this skill was so exciting! Laura did such a great job of breaking down this process into manageable steps that made for little frustration. I can’t wait to see my daughter’s next quilt!"
Hollie
"I was ecstatic about my daughter making her first quilt! I have always loved quilts, but had never made one. Laura was able to show my daughter a process that she could understand and was the simplest and quickest way to get the job done! This is everything when you have a child with ADHD like my daughter. I was so inspired by Laura's teaching my daughter that I began quilting myself!"
Amy
"My girls have always loved crafting. Quilting is another unique crafting skill and my girls were excited to learn. They enjoyed making their quilts and they went on to make more!"
Carla
"Laura's confidence and expertise as a teacher made it so easy for me to just enjoy watching my daughter learn to sew, quilt, and make her own corrections along the way. Without her guidance, this isn't something I ever would have been able to help my daughter through. With Laura as a teacher, the whole process seems easier than I imagined it would be. I even picked up some new skills as I jumped in and learned along with my daughter. It brought me so much joy to see my daughter radiating with pride as she held up her finished quilt with a giant grin on her face! Thank you, Laura, for making quilting approachable and so much fun for us!"

FAQ

No! Almost any sewing machine will work – even a vintage machine! The machine will need a walking foot which can usually be purchased separately if your machine didn’t come with one. I sew on a Brother XR3774 in the videos (available on Amazon and Walmart), which is easy to use right out of the box and comes with a walking foot.

You’ll need a sewing machine, an iron, a good pair of scissors, and the My Very First Quilt kit. No other tools required!

Every kit includes access to the video lessons. The kit comes with two packs of 5″ pre-cut squares for the quilt top, backing fabric, batting, pre-cut binding strips, thread, a paper pattern, basting pins, sewing clips, a seam ripper, and a personalized quilt label.

The quilt takes eight to twelve hours to make, depending on age and skill. The quilt could be made in one day, but I recommend doing a bit each day over at least a week.

I recommend age eight or older. Younger children could do it if an adult helps.

The kit has everything needed to make a 36″ x 45″ finished quilt. It’s a great size to be a lap quilt or baby quilt!

Laura Piland is the quilter behind My Very First Quilt. She has been teaching kids how to quilt since 2018. She also owns Slice of Pi Quilts which sells quilt patterns to quilters all around the world.

The videos can be watched at any time, at your own pace. There are no set schedules or required check-ins.

Each kid will need their own kit. Each kit comes with a unique log-in for the videos so they can work independently and complete the quilt at their own pace.
